Current weather conditions 10th February 2012

We are open for business and fully intend to remain so. Main roads in the area are open (drive with care) and rail services into Ilkley are operating normally. Local shops are receiving deliveries and pubs and restaurants report brisk trade. We're always prepared for extreme weather here. The boilers are all recently serviced, we have plenty of cut logs for open fires and our 4x4 vehicle is ready to ferry guests up the hill from the station or town centre.

We appreciate that media reports are indicating a severe situation, which is currently just not the case. Of course, the position is different in other areas of the country and extra care and measures such as carrying a shovel in your vehicle, extra warm clothing and flasks of hot drinks are always wise precautions. On the positive side, Ilkley and Ilkley Moor look like Christmas card scenes and snowballs and sledging are the order of the day out here. Have a safe journey!

Original Harry Ramsden Saved!

The original Harry Ramsden's Restaurant in Guiseley closed late last year has been saved! Contrary to rumour, it's not going to become an Aldi supermarket but will stay as an iconic fish and chip restaurant. The Wetherby Whaler Group is said to be planning a £500,000 revamp before it re-opens.

Harry Ramsden's opened in 1931 in the art nouveau-styled building. The restaurant once served a record number of portions of fish and chips and also attracted celebrity diners including Margaret Thatcher, who paid it a visit during her 1979 and 1983 election campaigns.

"The famous fish and chip restaurant in Guiseley is the spiritual home of fish and chips in England," said Phillip Murphy of the Wetherby Whaler Group. "It would be a national scandal if it were to close at this time of economic uncertainly. Our investment has saved a Yorkshire landmark and will ensure the tradition of fine fish and chips continues at this important location. The new Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley will be our flagship restaurant."

Snowed in (almost!)

Snowing since noon. We're almost cut off here tonight. Guests planning to go clubbing in Leeds had their minibus cancelled. Everywhere still open in Ilkley though. Best advice - forget the car, wrap up warm and head down into town on foot! Pudding dog loving the snow tonight...

Dramatic Emmerdale Story being filmed on Ilkley Moor!

Nightime filming has been taking place this week for what is said to be a huge Emmerdale story to be aired later in February. The Yorkshire TV team have been filming dramatic scenes on night shoots on Ilkley Moor until 3am. Although they have been keeping exact details of the stunts under wraps for now, it is rumoured locally to involve some sort of major mock car crash. An insider reported "it's a top secret stunt - they've got a stunt crew, fire engines, paramedics on stand-by. They're really big scenes coming up in about six weeks' time which are top secret. It's going to be big."

Certainly, there have had some very powerful searchlights up there!

Filming has also been reportedly taking place on the moors above Silsden and Riddlesden.

An Emmerdale spokesperson recently confimed "It's a big dramatic storyline that will be on screen in February. It does involve a big stunt so we've had paramedics and fire crews."

Fresh Radio/ Yorkshire Dales Radio ceases broadcasting

Lots of folk in Ilkley and across the Yorkshire Dales will be saddened that Fresh Radio (formerly Fresh AM and originally Yorkshire Dales Radio) has ceased broadcasting tonight with the frequencies to be taken over by the big UKRD Group who run Stray FM. For the past few years Fresh has broadcast from Broughton Hall (well the business park there) but before that it came from what looked like a caravan in the centre of Skipton. We understand that Fresh will be rebranded as Stray FM taken over as part of an enlarged area across Harrogate.

Since 2007 Ilkley has enjoyed Fresh Radio in FM Stereo from a transmitter in Ben Rhydding. OK, sometimes it went down and it was rumoured at one stage that the transmitter had been turned off due to unpaid bills (under previous ownership). But we enjoyed Fresh! It was friendly. It was enjoyable. It was local.

Annie visited the studios to collect a prize she had won on the breakfast show, last summer. Even aged 10, she invariably correctly answered the breakfast trivia quiz and regularly texted the answer whilst eating breakfast! The first we would know was when her name was read out as the winner!. At the Fresh studios, she met Head of News James Wilson (I think he WAS Fresh Radio news!) and made very welcome. We were just amazed how low-key everything was - just three folk and that included the afternoon presenter and someone selling on air advertising!

Winter Work 2012 - Latest news

Work continues on our new cottage through the winter. The green oak timber frame was dropped in just before Christmas and more eco-polystyrene walling is being added throughout January. Next it will be the grass roof and starting work on the ground source heating supply.

The work is having very little affect on guests staying at Westwood Lodge and we continue to be fully open throughout the winter months.

Ilkley Moor on National Radio

If you were listening to Radio 4 "Today" this morning (Friday 18th November 2011), you'll have heard an item about our very own Ilkley Moor!

"On Ilkley Moor Bah't 'at" has been Yorkshire's anthem since Victorian times, but now a brass band leader is launching a campaign to stop it from dying out.

Gordon Eddison, a school music teacher and musical director of Otley Brass Band, explained to John Humprhys why he is campaigning to keep the song alive.

Olympic Torch Coming Through Ilkley

It's been confirmed that the route of the Olympic Torch will come through the centre of Ilkley on Sunday 24th June 2012. The route on the day takes the torch from Salford (near Manchester) over the Pennines to Keighley before heading up Airedale to Skipton over into Wharfedale and down the valley through Ilkley and onto Leeds. Bradford Voted Britain's Curry Capital!

Nearby Bradford has been voted Britain's Curry Capital! Bradford was nominated by people from all over the world with votes for Bradford restaurants coming in from cities from across Britain and abroad. The 2011 team comprised Aagrah Shipley, Kiplings Bradford, Prashad and Shimla Spice Keighley. The response to voting for Bradford was so big the voting website crashed!

A team of judges put the team of restaurants through their paces, scoring them on the standard of their food and service, their hygiene and cleanliness and how they serve their communities. Visit Bradford (Bradford Council's Tourism department) also submitted a bid document. Jacqui Bennet - Senior Tourism Development Officer for the Bradford District (which includes Ilkley and Wharfedale) - thanked everyone who helped the Bradford campaign.

Shimla Spice produced over 2000 emailed votes to win the title of Customer Restaurant of the Year 2011 and the city scored highly in every sector from "Scores on the Doors", to judges' visits and fund raising for The Curry Tree.

The judges decided the Bradford bid showed deep understanding of the curry sector and particularly noted the creation of the International Food Academy and the Food Ministry.

Bradford is 25 minutes by train from Ilkley and Shipley just 20 minutes.

Local celebrity - Sir Jimmy Saville OBE - will be sadly missed

We're all saddened to hear of the death of Sir Jimmy Saville OBE on Saturday at the age of 84. Sir Jimmy was a local lad - he was from Leeds and lived there (amongst other Yorkshire places) until he died. He regularly visited Ilkley where his stretch limousine could often be seen parked. Sir Jimmy was to switch on the Ilkley Christmas lights in just three weeks time. (Who's going to do that job now?)
An instantly recognisable figure, Jimmy Savile had an undeniable impact on British music. He famously fronted Top Of The Pops from the very first episode in 1964. Sir Jimmy was my idol. I was only 5 and can clearly remember early episodes on Wednesday night at 6.30pm (TOTP later moved to Thursday) and making sound recordings of the programme on my mum's spool-to-spool Grundig tape recorder. There were four DJ's who fronted TOTP in turn - David Jacobs, Pete Murray, Alan Freeman and Jimmy. But it was Jimmy Saville's career as a radio personality that undoubtedly helped enshrine the cult of the disc jockey.

Sir Jimmy was also a tireless charity campaigner. It is said he raised more than £40 million for good causes - especially Stoke Mandeville Hospital (where I was a patient once - everyone knew him there!).

Elderly Ladies Take Ilkley By Storm!

What we had thought had been a quiet group of young women staying in The Old Gallery - suddenly appeared on the doorstep, transformed into a much older looking set! They were dressed in fantastic outfits and heading down into town with twin set and pearls and handbags ready! Whether our girls were going to be content with half of milk stout is very doubtful though! As our photo shows, they attracted more than a few passing glances!

"We can't thank you enough for making the weekend such a memorable one. Your hospitality is fantastic, and the wine, cake and other goodies just added the final touches to our cottage stay. We thoroughly enjoyed winding down in the hot tub and the views from the roof terrace are amazing. We will definitely be recommending Westwood Lodge to all our other friends, and hopefully it won't be too long before we meet again. Thanks a million!" (Debra)

Autumn/ Winter Works 2011/12 - Latest news

Westwood Lodge is a Listed historic building and we carry out ongoing refurbishment and new work during the quieter winter months. This year, work has started early as we also have planning permission to build an additional cottage on the Victorian building plot to the north of Westwood Lodge. We need to get well advanced before the bad weather sets in! This will temporarily affect The Glenmoor and The Scullery Garden Apartments and noise may, at times, affect other accommodation until February (ish). We will make every effort to keep any disturbance to a minimum. Depending on the work, we may need to allocate some guests another cottage (or apartment) on arrival. We aim to run as near normally as possible with all facilities - except the football nets and upper terrace - open as usual. Cottage gardens and the roof garden will not be affected. Work will only take place between 8am and 4pm (approx) Mondays to Fridays (and possibly Saturday mornings if there have been delays midweek). No work will take place on Saturday afternoons, Sundays or during the Christmas/ New Year period, although it is likely that some materials and equipment will be stored here. The worksite will be fenced and secured at all times with no access. For details of the planned works schedule (which may change depending on weather and other factors), please email us.

2012 Going Live!

Bookings for 2012 are now open. Popular dates such as The Old Gallery at Christmas and New Year may get taken quickly, so now is the time to book ahead!

Winter 2011/12 will see more refurbishment and upgrades as well as our proposed grass roofed cottage on the adjoining plot (see separate post). We're hoping to get permission for a new games room that will feature table football, pool and a "chillout" zone. Weather (and funds!) permitting, will see re-roofing, using the original slates new cast guttering and replacement of the last of the 1960's windows with original Victorian style ones. We especially want to get the windows in the original writing room - now The Moorview - replaced as quickly as we can. We've also got plans for other parts of the main house so, watch this space!

Green Tourism Week 6th - 13th June 2011

As accredited Gold members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, we'll be joining in the first ever Green Tourism Week. We're looking at a range of ideas for things we can do. Ideas so far include a "pen and phone amnesty". All old pens and mobiles received will be donated to charity for re-use. We're also going to have a special home-grown vegetable growing class for children staying that week. We're trying to encourage a low car use week with an extra push for us all to use our excellent local train and bus services - or even our excellent two legs! Nationally, environmental campaigner Tony Juniper has been appointed patron of the first Green Tourism Week, which is being endorsed by VisitEngland. Juniper is currently a special adviser to the Prince of Wales Charities' International Sustainability Unit and a senior associate with the Cambridge University Programme for Sustainability Leadership. He will be a figurehead for Green Tourism Week as well as preparing blogs and chairing a panel of green tourism experts. Jason Freezer of VisitEngland said: "Sustainability is fast becoming an essential part of competitive positioning in the tourism industry and VisitEngland is delighted to support a campaign which will help showcase to the industry the superb work already being done in this area and which demonstrates that green is increasingly not just a 'nice to have' but rather an essential strategic driver for business growth." In a new, 12-part series for ITV1, Adrian Edmondson returns to the county of his birth, Yorkshire, to bring us the stories behind a summer in the life of the Yorkshire Dales. The Dales is currently on ITV Mondays at 8pm. Spectacularly beautiful they may be – but the Dales are also a challenging environment for the people who live there in some of its remote communities. Adrian used to spend many of his childhood summers in the Yorkshire Dales with his family, but in this series he meets a number of characters who live all year round there amidst the stunning scenery. Adrian Edmondson commented to ITV My parents were very keen on ‘days out’ and picnics, we spent a lot of our time visiting Bolton Abbey, and Aysgarth Falls and we used to walk across Ilkley Moor about once a week. The Dales is also like a geography text book, I spent a lot of time going there on school field trips. As I got into my mid teens the Dales became a regular spot for me and my mates to go camping/hiking/chasing girls/trying to get served in pubs....

Is Double Summertime (DST) on the way?

Is double summertime (BST) on the way to Yorkshire and the UK? The government's eagerly awaited official tourism strategy is due to be published any day now. At the heart of the strategy could well be a decision to back 'double summertime' - putting the clocks forward to British Summer Time plus one hour in summer, as well as having the clocks one hour ahead of GMT in winter. ie British Summer time in winter! Some in Scotland will be unhappy as daylight is worse there in winter. However, in Yorkshire, two extra hours of daylight in the summer evenings could make a holiday here much more attractive in the spring and autumn. There are also said to be significant benefits for the environment - with lower levels of energy consumption. The estimates are that the tourism industry in the UK will benefit to the tune of £3.5 billion extra per year - a major boost in this year of uncertainty.

Leeds CyclePoint is the biz!

Based on a successful Dutch concept, you can now turn-up and hire bikes at Leeds Station - the first CyclePoint in the UK. We tried it this week to visit our architect (thanks Matt!). Friendly Andy at CyclePoint quickly sorted us out and within minutes we were cycling across the city centre, along the canal, under the flyover and away! No traffic jams, no taxis, no hassle! So if you're heading out for a day in Leeds (Harvey Nicks, Armouries Museum, waterfront cafes, nightlife etc), it's a great way of seeing the sites. Leeds City is just £4.90 return on the train (after 9.30am, anytime at weekends) and bike hire for the day is £8. Here's us with Paula whizzing through Holbeck just to prove it! First Snowfall of Winter

Like many areas in the north and north east, we've had our first snowfall of the winter. There's been sledging and snowball fights but roads and rail services have been operating normally. For guests arriving on any day during the winter, please check the Met Office website for Skipton. Click here before setting out! We've never been cut off, although we have had to rescue guests in our 4x4 when it's been really bad. But once here, it's great in snowy weather! .Latest - it's still all clear for guests arriving. Take extra care getting up the hill and pack a shovel and boots just in case things get worse during your stay!

Christmas Lights Switched on!

Christmas lights in Ilkley have been switched on by actress Kathryn Apanowicz. The television and radio presenter and partner of the late Richard Whiteley, had a good turnout on The Grove, which was closed to traffic. Born locally, Kathryn Apanowicz is best known for her television appearances in the 1980s, playing nurse Rose Butchins in BBC1 series Angels, and Magda Czajkowski in EastEnders. She has also had minor roles in Emmerdale and Coronation Street, and as a child she was in the film Bugsy Malone. She and Channel 4 Countdown presenter Richard Whiteley, who died in 2005, used to live in nearby Burley Woodhead. Richard was a major supporter of community events, who frequently found time to perform local opening ceremonies and Christmas lights switch-on events. He even became the special guest at an Ilkley art exhibition at very short notice in 2004 after being spotted walking past the venue where Coronation Street stars had failed to show up. There had been plans to ask him to switch on the Ilkley lights in the year he died.

As well as the Listed Building Consent application currently lodged with our local council and which will see replacement of all the remaining 1960's windows, new guttering etc. we've got a raft of other work planned over the winter. This includes :-

All cottages will have eco wooden kitchen floors (the apartments already have them)
All cottages and apartments will have iPod docking facilities
All master bedrooms and all apartment bedrooms will have flat screen digital TVs (by late 2011 when we go fully digital)
All cottages will have an upstairs family bathroom (two bathrooms in The Old Gallery) and a further ensuite
All cottages and apartments will have iPlayer, 4oD and movies/ music on demand (the latter at extrda cost)
All cottages and apartments will have a review of lighting taking advantage of the new eco technology
All cottages and apartments will have environmentally friendly cleaning materials and paperware throughout
and much more..!

Philip Catches Cycling Bug!

Philip Richardson, from Essex, is a regular guest here at Westwood Lodge. He's stayed here loads of times and is almost part of the furniture! He courted with his (then) girlfriend Theresa here. They came here for their honeymoon and have visited at least 6 times since (our computer records only go back to 2003!). Now Theresa is expecting their first baby so they'll be needing to try one of our larger cottages perhaps? Do please keep coming!

This year Philip splashed out on a new bike from JD Cycles here in Ilkley. He's putting it to good use as in May & June this year, Phil, together with some of his colleagues, will be raising money for the ‘Children’s Hospices UK’ charity by cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End… some 936.3 miles!

This event is also being supported by a host of fundraising and volunteering events by Barclays Bank colleagues across the UK, in an attempt to raise as much money as possible for the 42 nationwide children’s hospices that support life-limited children in the UK.

A web site has been created – http://www.lifecycle-uk.net/ for further information, including detail on the riders, progress so far and, of course, a Just Giving link. The web site will be constantly updated to maximise interest (see some of the initial photos!) and will ultimately follow the daily journey of the riders.

Children’s Hospices UK - http://www.childhospice.org.uk/ is a national charity which supports all 42 children's hospices across the UK which in turn, provides a wide range of care to some 25,000 children and their families. Their vision is for every child who is not expected to reach adulthood to have access along with their families to the highest standards of children's hospice care and support close to home.

Phil rides a Scott CR1 Team and is worried that he has more lycra in his bottom drawer than Theresa. Phil says "If I can show half as much grit and determination as the children we are trying to help the ride will be a breeze

More Restoration Work to Westwood Lodge - Listed Building Consent application submitted

Tim and Paula have submitted an application to further restore Westwood Lodge to her former glory. Out will go all the remaining 1960's and 70's modern softwood windows to be replaced by proper Victorian style mock sashes. Modern Velux windows will go too, to be replaced by conservation style windows or proper slate dormers in the style of the originals that still exist. The courtyard cottages will be re-roofed using the original slates that will be carefully removed and relaid with galvanised nails after insulation has been installed and any rotten timbers replaced. Rusting guttering will be renewed with aluminium retro style in keeping with the originals. The biggest change will see the original double-hipped roof and glazing to the Victorian writing room (now The Moorview) reinstated to replace the ugly, flat roofed modern monstrosity. A separate planning application regarding Tim and Paula's domestic living arrangements will be made later in the year.

Well another Festival over and some great speakers. For such a small town to be able to attract the likes of John Simpson, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Michael Parkinson and Jenny Eclair speaks volumes for the efforts that the Festival organisers go to.

Ilkley Triathlon 2010

If you've never done a triathlon (sprint or full Olympic) but fancy having a go, then the Ilkley Tri organised by Leeds and Bradford Triathlon Club is a great event! Make a note now for next September (usually around 21st) and another note to sign-up on 1st May 2011 as places go fast! Tim got round for the fifth time. Whilst well down the field he was pleased to cross the finish line without the feeling of an impending seizure!

World Junior Triathlete Champion and local lad Jonathan Brownlee presented prizes. He soon had a gaggle of young ladies wanting a photo - including our Alice!

Helping Ben's Wish to Walk

benswishtowalk.co.uk: We are delighted that daughter Annie helped by sister Alice and school friends organised a tea and bun stall at Westwood Lodge yesterday, raising over £200 to pass on to Ben's Wish To Walk Charity. Ben Smithson is a local 9 year old with Cerebral Palsy. Here's the story from his parents: . "Ben decided to come into the world 10 weeks early and sustained some oxygen starvation after birth. . Ben was a very happy baby and loved being with people. We did however notice he was not reaching his developmental milestones, he sat unaided at 11 months & crawled at 18 months. All Bens doctors told us it was delayed development, and we trusted them. . Ben was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was nearly 2 ½ years old, we were shocked but in some ways relieved as he would now receive the help he needed. . So Ben has always been playing catch up on all the early intervention he missed out on. This has however NEVER stopped Ben from achieving all he wants in life. We have a saying in our house if he can’t do it he finds ‘Ben’s way’ of doing it. . A little over a year ago we heard about several children who had gone to a Children’s Hospital in America and has surgery called Selective Dorsal Rizhotomy. After a lot of talking and research we decided as parents we should at least see if Ben was a suitable candidate for the surgery. And so to today - Ben was accepted for surgery on 6th May 2010. Now the fund raising begins.... We have a huge mountain to climb and raise a estimated £45,000 by January 2011."

Red Open Top Buses in LEEDS?

Distinctive open top double-decker bus will offer a ‘hop on, hop off’ sightseeing service across a five mile route through Leeds fro today. The route will take in such sights as Millennium Square, the Corn Exchange and the Victoria Quarter. The Leeds City Cruises will take visitors along Leeds’ waterways historical route from Clarence Dock to Brewery Wharf and onto Granary Wharf. The bus stops at twelve sightseeing stops across the city. Visitors can “hop-on and hop-off” at each stop to explore throughout the whole day. The bus will run six times each day from 22nd May until 26th September and the Leeds City Cruises will run every weekend from 22nd May to 26th September, and every day throughout August. Tickets for Leeds City Sightseeing Bus will be £7.50 for an adult, £3.75 for children, concessions for students and seniors will be £5.50 and a family ticket will be £17.00. Trains are largely running to schedule and the airport is open. Don't forget to pack snacks, water, warm clothes, fully charged mobile phone, shovel, blankets and a full tank of fuel just in case you have problems en route. Original Victorian Arch restored

The winter refurbishment programme has set off with the original pedestrian arched entrance being restored. Bricked-up for many years (some say since the First World War!) it too a digger two days to clear the rubble and debris that was almost hiding it from view. Working with neighbours, we will be continuing to restore The Carriage Road that runs at the back of the gardens, by clearing up to 100 tonnes of overgrown stinging nettles, laurel, leaf mulch and garden debris.

1st Ilkley Science Festival

Ilkley has just had it's first ever science fair and Westwood Lodge guests were among the first audiences. A group of leading scientists from Leeds University gave various lectures at Ilkley Grammar School in a bid to help boost funds for a student trip to Ecuador. Headteacher Gillian James officially opened the talks, which were held over two days. They covered a wide range of science topics such as Marion Hetherinton’s talk on chocolate addiction. Prof Hetherington described how we learn to like bitter foods including vegetables. She encouraged parents to keep giving their children vegetables because they need to eat them at least ten times before they develop a taste for them! Another speaker, Catriona Morrison, a world expert in memory, made the audience recall their earliest memory and suggested that our earliest memories date from when we first have the words to describe an event. All in all - a great weekend and we hope the event will become an annual one.

Therefore, guests who take out a UK Plus Holiday Cancellation Insurance policy will find it COVERS SWINE FLU AS PER ANY OTHER MEDICAL RISK in accordance with the normal Policy Terms and Conditions. This will come as a great relief to many planning holidays. If you do NOT take out our recommended cancellation insurance or have alternative cover, do check and consider what would happen if you had to cancel your stay due to a member of your party being taken ill with Swine Flu. We will apply our Standard Booking Conditions to any such cancellation. In short, we cannot afford to have empty accommodation and, if you do not have suitable cover, you may find yourself having to pay for a holiday you are unable to take. Bradford becomes world's first "City of Film"

Bradford may not be top of your "must do" places to visit this year, but it has a lot going for it. There's The UK National Media Museum, The Alhambra and the best curry in the North, for starters! Now there's another reason as Bradford has been chosen to become the world's first-ever city of film. Awarded by the United Nations, the city is being recognised for films made in the city, the dedicated media museum and several film festivals held each year. Billy Liar and part of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life were made in Bradford and The Railway Children was filmed on the nearby Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Bollywood stars often visit the city and Simon Beaufoy, the screenwriter for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, said the accolade was "superb news" for his hometown. "Not only has Bradford played a crucial role in the story of cinema and helped shape its history, it has inspirational plans to enhance its future relationship with film, which will benefit both the local community and the industry at large." Bradford is just 25 minutes by rail from Ilkley with trains every half-hour throughout the day.

Enjoy England Gold Awards

We are delighted our three courtyard cottages have each been awarded the first self-catering Gold Awards for high standards and service excellence. Gold Awards are only given to those properties in the Four Star category scoring a minimum of 84 out of 86 in the annual inspection by Enjoy England (the old English Tourism Council) and unable to be rated as Five Star due to not being able to meet certain requirements (in our case being Listed Historic Buildings and having restricted bedroom space).

This means that all 7 properties at Westwood Lodge have either been rated as Five Stars or Four Stars GOLD.

Charles Darwin in Ilkley!

It's 200 years since Charles Darwin was born. He became world famous for his book "On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection" published exactly 150 years ago. What is less well known is that Darwin came to Ilkley just before his work was published. He arrived on 4th October 1859 to take the "water cure" at the Wells House Hydro - just 200 yards down the road from Westwood Lodge. He was joined by his wife and family and they enjoyed Ilkley so much that they took an apartment here at North House (now known as Hillside). Darwin received his review copy prior to publication, was here when his book was officially published (24th November) and where he started revisions for the second edition of his great work. Visitors to Westwood Lodge can still see both Wells House and North House as well as stroll around the Darwin Millenium Gardens and maze, just a couple of minutes walk from Westwood Lodge Ilkley Moor.

There's been great excitement here! Pudding has given birth to a litter of 5 English Springer Pups. If you come to stay before early April (2009), you're sure to meet them - Bread and Butter Pudding, Rice Pudding, Chocolate Pudding, Summer Pudding and Sticky Toffee Pudding! They've all been snapped up and will soon be going to their new homes. However, it's been great fun and a huge hit with children of all ages! Former First Lady Cherie Blair is to be the opening speaker at The 2008 Ilkley Literature Festval. Other key note speakers will include the last Governor of Hong Kong - Chris Patten, poet Ian Macmillan and broadcaster Kate Adie. The festival runs from Friday 3rd October until 19th of the month. Restaurant Review - Ilkley Piccolino

Now I was a bit sad when Johnson's closed earlier in the year. OK! So, I had never been in the place but, somehow it seemed to fit in with Ilkley life reasonably well. I had never even heard of the Piccolino chain, but they appear to have a dozen odd places across the North of England, so must be a biggish operation. Certainly, the money that has been spent ripping and fitting out 31/33 Brook Street suggests a lavish budget. This place is more upmarket than I had expected. It's not like Pizza Express; more an Italian Farsyde. The decor is great - modern without being crass. If you're downstairs, it's a bit of a goldfish bowl as the full length windows mean it's not the place to be carrying on an illicit affair. Better book upstairs - especially the table in the bay window, where you can watch the comings and goings of Ilkley life rather than be watched. If you want to be seen, any of the downstairs tables facing into the street should do the trick. There were lots of staff when we visited and things have yet to settle down. Despite booking and wishing to dine straightaway with young children, we were ushered to the bar area for pre-dinner drinks as our table wasn't ready. We were then asked for our "tab card" which we had never heard of. You need one of these when you arrive (apparantly). It all seemed a bit of a waste of time for, even before our drinks had arrived, we were ushered off to our table and our plastic credit-type tab card was collected back in, to be replaced by an identical looking "cloakroom card". I did ask if we needed another card to enable us to eat and was dryly told that a Mastercard would be needed for that! The manager looked quite stressed by all this, even though the place was three-quarters empty at 5.30pm. The service was not as good as it should have been, given the large numbers of staff. It's also that kind of place where even a Yorkshire waiter insists on calling you Senor. Cringe cringe! Having spent ages going through the menu trying to find something for our 7 and 9 year olds, it was annoying to find halfway through ordering that there is a separate children's menu, which was not offered at the outset. So, we then had to start again! The food for adults is excellent - interesting pasta dishes, very fresh tasting and good salads. Beware that portions are adequate, rather than generous. We didn't have time for desserts but they too looked good. Young children may well struggle, especially if they are used to Pizza Express or La Sila, both of which are much more children orientated. No, this place is going to be serious competition for a number of other places in town. It's ideal for small adult groups rather than couples, as the atmosphere is very open rather than intimate. All in all, recommended. Decor 10/10, Atmosphere 9/10, Food 9/10, Value 7/10.

I'll be frank and say that when I heard that a smoothie bar was to open on Wells Road, I had big doubts. When the opening got delayed by several months, failed to get a hot food licence, announced that they didn't want to appeal just to school children and then struggled to find staff (they even approached me, so they must have been desperate!), my expectations were low. It was therefore a pleasant surprise when I tried it out last week, having had favourable comments from my children who had already been several times in the opening few days. The place is bigger than I expected, going right back into a lounge room at the rear. The decor is clean and fresh and not nearly as cheap and cheerful as I feared. The menu is very extensive when you consider it revolves around a few drinks, sandwiches and salads. For example, there are a dozen different smoothies to try with exotic ingredients such as acai and passion fruit. And here lies the problem. At peak periods they just can't cope with the menu. I called in on a Saturday afternoon and, whilst not over full, you could immediately sense from the absence of drinks and food on the tables that service was struggling. I had to wait nearly forty minutes for a basic panini (the only hot food). Others had clearly got fed-up and left. A waitress was wandering around with a tray of items and I had to point out that the people had gone at least fifteen minutes before it arrived. The preparation area is on full display and staff were trying to identify - without success - whether table 14 had ordered a Tropical Storm or a Brazilian Boost. The quality of the food and drinks is general very good. The smoothies are not cheap but interesting and tasty. The cakes - especially the organic carrot cake - were good, the panini (goats cheese and roasted vegetables) ok but served with a very tired salad garnish. Some things are over the top. You can't just have a pot of tea, you have to have a wooden board boasting a "tea temple with a fine glass teapot". All very well but glass is not good for keeping the tea hot and it was half cold by the time it arrived. There was more commotion when it was time to pay. A long wait whilst staff were trying to work out more orders and then no change in the til, meaning that the tip box had to be raided for coins. I hope Smoooth succeeds. A lot of preparation has gone into the place and - with the multi-nationals like Pizza Express creeping in, Ilkley needs small, individual places to open up like this. They must get the service sorted out and need to consider opening on Sundays. They also promote their website, but that doesn't exist yet either. Do go when it's quiet; avoid on a Saturday, or if you've got a train to catch. 14-16 Wells Road (01943) 600064. Take-away also available. Quality 9/10, Atmosphere 9/10, Service 2/10, Value 7/10, Wow factor 8/10. STOP PRESS - December 2010 - we hear that Smoooth has now closed. Very sad.

Ilkley Triathlon - 23rd September 2007

This has become a bit of an annual habit for a whole group of us in Wharfedale. The image of a triathlon always conjured up for me a picture of sinewy, anorexic-looking men and women sweating their way up and down mountains for hours on end, without an ounce of enjoyment to show for their endeavours. Well, I never thought I would join them! The Ilkley Triathlon is organised by Leeds and Bradford Triathlon Club and is a "sprint" (ie shorter) event. It's still 20 lengths of the pool, immediately followed by a 15km hilly cycle ride (with fresh air and great views!) and finishing off with a 5km hilly run. Hard work unless you're pretty fit, but a more helpful and encouraging group of people organising it, you couldn't hope to meet! Because everyone sets off at different times, and the course is in laps, nobody has any idea - or cares - how well you're doing. Indeed, there are quiet stretches where you could stop running or even push your bike uphill without anyone spotting you, if things are tough - even though 300 odd people do the event. Above all, there's this marvellous buzz as you cross the finishing line with that feeling of achievement! If you're thinking of getting a bit fitter this winter and want to have something to aim for then this could be it. Highly recommended!

Restaurant Review - Martha and Vincent, The Grove, Ilkley

Recently re-opened following turbulent times as "Tubby Wadlow's", this latest incarnation is the work of local millionaire Chris Stainton; (a frequent guest at Westwood Lodge in the past!). Having quashed rumours of opening as an oyster and champagne bar, Martha and Vincent is very similar in concept to half-a dozen other places in town - the best known (and longest established) of which is Farsyde. Looking out to the forlorn, closed "the grove" across the road shows how restaurants come and go quickly in Ilkley and just what a tough job MandV's will have to break in. Decor is typically modern and minimalist, but nowhere near as bleak or "faux leathered" as "the grove" was. One is left wondering though what was the matter with what they inherited? The lunchtime menu was simple, yet varied and interesting. The scallops on blinis was a superb starter and the artichoke salad passed muster. Sea bream main was OK, but being totally drenched in butter, the delicate fish was, I felt, overpowered. The salmon held up better with the bed of crushed peas voted a hit. Desserts were appealing with the creme brulee infused with lavender, the most curious - but it worked! The wine list was good with a selection available by the glass. Background music was just right for a lunchtime and service was efficient and courteous. The toilets could have done with a clean; the dust on the venetian blinds was obvious to all in the glistening sunshine. Typical 3-course lunch for two, with coffee and a glass of wine each - around £65 or £45 for 2-course . Quality 9/10, Service 9/10, Value 7/10, Wow factor 8/10.

Foot and Mouth Disease

OK - the facts... There has been a confirmed outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) at a farm in Surrey. The Government has imposed an immediate protection and surveillance zone and a ban has been placed on the movement of pigs, sheep and cattle. Advice from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) is that FMD is not a direct public health threat and the Food Standards Agency considers that FMD has no implications for the human food chain. During the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001, the tourism industry suffered dramatically alongside farming. However, much of the suffering caused to tourism businesses was unnecessary and caused by a media frenzy which created public confusion and concern. Sensationalist headlines and negative images of livestock being burned by the roadsides caused visitors to stay away in droves and resulted in the perception that the countryside was closed. Efforts must be taken to ensure that we do not see a mass closedown of the countryside, which was witnessed in 2001, and we must stress that visitors can and should continue to enjoy the countryside. The authorities must learn from the outbreak in 2001 and to prevent FMD devastating the tourism economy in Yorkshire once again. The Yorkshire Tourist Board is working closely with the media to ensure that reporting is accurate and editors take a responsible approach to covering the emerging situation as it may develop. All efforts must be taken to ensure that we do not see a mass closedown of the countryside, which was witnessed in 2001. Remember - as of today - there are no cases of foot and mouth disease in Yorkshire. We ask for your support in ensuring that the Yorkshire tourism industry does not suffer unnecessarily due to the national alert regarding foot and mouth disease. We urge you to work with us and ensure that we counter any negative perceptions together by engaging the industry and providing up to date accurate information. There is nothing to prevent people travelling into and enjoying the countryside. You will find nothing changed and you are free to enjoy its natural beauty. Farming and tourism in rural areas are interdependent. Both industries need to work together to tackle the issues arising. Lessons have been learned following the 2001 outbreak of Foot and Mouth. The Haskin report made recommendations to the Government for handling any future outbreaks in light of how it affected tourism. Let's hope they will be put into practice!

CLA Game Fair At Harewood Cancelled

We hear that the CLA Game Fair due to open at Harewood House on Friday 27th July has been CANCELLED. "Adverse, and worse than predicted weather which has hit Harewood Estate has now defeated all the efforts the organisers have made in order to open the show. Despite weeks of rain the site was drying out well before the deluge of rain on Friday afternoon followed by lighter but continuous rain throughout the weekend. The site is now saturated with water lying in all areas of the showground regardless of the ditches which have been dug to drain as much excess as possible. Vehicle movement is at a stand still other than movement along the 4000 metres of trackway and acres of bark that have been put along all the show rows. The concern is that once the exhibitors, catering units and other show contractors arrive many vehicles would have to drive off the protected areas in order to set up and the ground cannot take it. This would create a safety issue apart from the other issues of vehicles getting stuck or not being able to reach their stands". PLEASE NOTE THAT WESTWOOD LODGE IS VERY MUCH OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL as are the vast majority of attractions in this part of Yorkshire and (as far as we know) all restaurants, pubs, tea rooms etc. We look forward to welcoming all guests who were planning to attend the CLA Game Fair in the knowledge that there is still lots and lots to do during your stay with us.

Green Tourism

Westwood Lodge has always had an Environmental Policy, but now we've gone a step further and joined The Green Tourism Business Scheme. We intend to reduce our environmental impact more by - for example - encouraging guests to come here by train, or at least not use their car whilst here. We're looking at environmentally friendly cleaning products and how we can get our local Council to work with us on recycling. There's much more to come! But, - how important is Green Tourism to you? Well what has it come to? I've never written a blog entry before, but even Westwood has given in! We're not going to fill this with what my father would call "twoddle", but we will drop in some of the latest news about Westwood Lodge, Ilkley Moor and Wharfedale. For example, restaurants change hands faster than we can update our reviews, so we'll be giving the lastest feedback from guests and any meal I get to take Paula out to! We're also happy to post guest feedback about their stay with us, sights and scenes, places to go - or not go - and generally any gossip that doesn't infringe libel law!
